Pressure-treated deck beams and joists being framed over a leveled gravel base beside the house

This backyard deck was built from the ground up against the rear of the home. It started with properly sized footings and adjustable post bases, followed by a pressure-treated beam-and-joist frame tied together with galvanized hangers and structural screws for a flat, solid platform.

The decking was installed with even gapping and clean picture-framed edges, neatly notched around each post, then sealed to stand up to the seasons. Support posts were left in place for a future covered roof over the new outdoor living space.

Materials Used

Pressure-treated lumber beams, joists, and decking; galvanized joist hangers and structural screws; adjustable post bases; penetrating wood stain and sealer.

Challenges

Building a large, dead-level deck on a sloping rural yard, with footings and adjustable post bases sized to stay solid through the freeze-thaw seasons.

Result

A spacious, rock-solid deck with clean picture-framed edges and sealed boards — posts already set for a future covered roof.
